WHAT IS A THYROID ULTRASOUND? The thyroid ultrasound uses ultrasound waves to identify the surface, shape, size, and texture of the thyroid gland. The thyroid ultrasound does not use magnetic fields and is safe for use regardless of biological implants such as pacemaker, hearing aids, etc. WHY A THYROID ULTRASOUND? Depending on the condition of your thyroid, the provider will need to see the makeup of your gland using ultrasound imaging. The surface, shape, size, and texture of your thyroid can help identify several conditions that may be related to thyroid disease. The thyroid ultrasound may open the door to many discoveries related to your thyroid condition/thyroid disease and will assist the doctor in the management of your treatment. HOW TO PREPARE FOR A THYROID ULTRASOUND? To ensure the best imaging possible, please remove all neck jewellery (i.e.: necklaces, chains, dog tags) as it can get in the way of the technician performing the ultrasound. Please wear tops with open necklines (i.e.: scoop neckline, square neckline, v-neckline) to facilitate the ultrasound. Please avoid wearing tops with restricting necklines (i.e.: turtlenecks, crew neckline) as they make the imaging process difficulty.
